The April 2003 National
Bible
Conference
Sponsored by the New England Bible Conference
The Independent Fundamental Bible Conference held its tenth annual series of meetings on April 28-May 1, 2003. This was a four day Bible Conference (Monday through Thursday) hosted by the Middletown Bible Church, Middletown, Connecticut and sponsored by the New England Bible Conference. The conference was well attended with approximately 15 states represented, including all of the New England states, the mid-Atlantic states, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Alabama, etc.
The conference has been patterned somewhat after some of the old fashioned Bible conferences of the past such as the Niagara Bible conferences or the Northfield Bible conferences of nearly a century ago. One old timer described the Niagara Conferences as follows: "Those were the days of Brookes and West and Parsons and Erdman and Moorehead and Nicholson and Needham and Gordon. Oh, what discussions were held in those days! How the Lord Jesus Christ was exalted, how the Holy Spirit was honored, and how the Bible was expounded! The bread of life broken and distributed at the Niagara Bible Conference is feeding the children of God in this land to this day . . . There have been Bible conferences since, all stimulated by this one, . . . but they have been like so many steepings of the same tea." Our desire is to have God’s kind of moving in God’s direction for God’s glory.
The speakers handled the Word of God well, and their exposition of the sacred Text was greatly appreciated and valued.
Dr. John C. Whitcomb is a pioneer in the field of Biblical creationism. His book, The Genesis Flood, co-authored with Dr. Henry Morris has been considered as one of the major influences which launched the modern creationist movement. At the conference he presented a series on creation/evolution. He dealt with the following topics: The Creator of the World, The Origin of Mankind, Dinosaurs and Men, The Flood and Modern Geology and The Flood and Final Judgment.
Dr. John Hartog III, from Faith Baptist Bible Seminary in Iowa, gave a series of six messages on the Minor Prophets. He gave very helpful messages on Hosea, Amos, Habakkuk, Haggai and Zechariah. Dr. Hartog’s excitement for the things of God and love for His Word is very evident in these messages.
Dr. Fred Moritz is the General Director of Baptist World Mission located in Decatur Alabama. He gave a series of exegetical messages all dealing with the important theme of the glory of God: God’s Exclusive Glory, The Glory of God in the Ministry, The Gospel and the Glory of God, The Glory of God in Eternity, and The Glory of God in Christian Service. It was a very important reminder that God’s chief priority, in all that He does, is the glory of God.
All of these messages are highly recommended and are available on cassette tapes (see order forms enclosed).
The music for the conference involved God-honoring congregational singing, choir specials and other special music by soloists and small groups. The music was Christ-centered, heart-warming, and chosen in such a way as to lift up the great truths of the Word of God. This was important in a day when many are being very careless and casual and contemporary (in the wrong way) when it comes to the ministry of sacred music.
A special ladies’ session was held on the third day of the conference. Two of the ladies from the host church shared some helpful and challenging devotional thoughts (see Cassette Tape #11).
